Last updated: June 2026. Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links. If you sign up through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. ElevenLabs is one of the tools I pay for and use to run Lars Miller Media.
ElevenLabs costs nothing to start and runs from about $5 to $330 a month on its main paid plans, billed by a monthly pool of credits where roughly one credit equals one character of speech. The plan you need comes down to one number: how many minutes of audio you publish each month. I narrate my newsletter and cut video voiceovers on the $22 Creator plan, and below I map every tier to real output so you can pick without guessing.

What does ElevenLabs cost?
ElevenLabs runs six standard tiers plus a custom enterprise option. Prices below are the monthly rates at the time of writing. Annual billing drops the effective cost by roughly two months across the year, so check the live page before you commit.
| Plan | Monthly price | Monthly credits | Audio (approx.) | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | ~10,000 | ~10 min | Testing the voices |
| Starter | ~$5 | ~30,000 | ~30 min | Light voiceovers, instant cloning |
| Creator | ~$22 | ~100,000 | ~100 min | Creators and solo operators |
| Pro | ~$99 | ~500,000 | ~500 min | Podcasters, heavy publishers |
| Scale | ~$330 | ~2,000,000 | Large volume | Teams producing audio daily |
| Business | ~$1,320 | ~11,000,000 | Very large volume | Studios and product teams |
What a credit actually buys
One credit covers about one character of text-to-speech, so a 1,000-character paragraph costs roughly 1,000 credits. Three numbers from my own account make it concrete:
- A 1,200-word newsletter narrated in my cloned voice runs 7,000 to 8,000 credits.
- A 60-second video voiceover script costs 800 to 1,200 credits.
- The highest-fidelity and multilingual models burn credits faster, so a model change shifts your monthly math.
On the Creator plan’s 100,000 credits I produce four narrated newsletters and a dozen short voiceovers a month and keep headroom. Publish daily audio or full podcast episodes and you will hit the Creator ceiling inside two weeks, which is the signal to move to Pro.
When to upgrade from Free
Stay on Free while you test voices and generate the occasional clip. Two things push you to a paid plan the moment you publish audio under your own brand: the free tier requires attribution, and commercial-use rights start on the paid plans. Move to Starter for voice cloning and commercial rights on a small budget. Move to Creator once audio becomes a weekly habit. Move to Pro when you publish most days or run audio for clients.

Annual vs monthly billing
Annual billing saves about two months of cost over the year. Pick annual once you know audio is a fixture in your workflow. Pay monthly for the first quarter if you are still testing demand, watch your credit usage, then switch to annual when your tier is settled.
Costs the pricing page hides
- Overages. Blow past your monthly credits and you either wait for the reset or buy more. Heavy months quietly push you toward the next tier, so track usage.
- Model choice changes the bill. The newest models use more credits per character. Test whether a lighter model is good enough before you default to the priciest one.
- Cloning quality depends on your sample. A clean input recording avoids wasted credits on re-generations.
- Seats live on higher tiers. Agencies should price around Scale or Business rather than stacking Creator accounts.
Is ElevenLabs worth it?
For me the Creator plan pays for itself every month. It costs about the price of two coffees a week and replaces both the hours I would spend recording narration and the fee for a voice artist on routine clips. The voice quality is the best I have used, the cloning convinces subscribers who tell me they like hearing the newsletter, and the credit system stays predictable once you map it to minutes. Skip a paid plan if you produce almost no audio. Keep a human in the chair if you run a flagship podcast that lives on improvisation and warmth. For newsletter narration, video voiceovers, fast prototyping, and multilingual versions, it earns its place.
How I use ElevenLabs in my stack
The workflow slots in right after writing and before publishing. I draft the newsletter, generate the narration in my cloned voice, and attach the audio to the email and the blog version. For short-form video I generate a voiceover from a script in about the time it takes to read it aloud. When I want a piece to reach a non-English audience, I run it through the multilingual models for a localized version.
Frequently asked questions
Does ElevenLabs have a free plan?
Yes. The free plan includes about ten minutes of audio per month and the core text-to-speech feature, with an attribution requirement and no commercial use.
How much does ElevenLabs cost for commercial use?
Commercial rights begin on the paid plans, starting at Starter around $5 a month. Most creators land on Creator at about $22 a month for the credit headroom and professional voice cloning.
What is the difference between Creator and Pro?
Creator gives about 100 minutes of audio a month. Pro gives about 500 minutes plus higher output quality. Publish daily or run client work and Pro becomes the practical choice.
Can I cancel anytime?
Monthly plans cancel at any time and you keep access through the end of the billing period. Annual plans lock the lower rate for the year.
