How to Create a Shot List for Your Brand Photoshoot

A brand photoshoot without a shot list is how you end up with 400 photos and none of the ones your website actually needed. The shot list is the single most valuable planning document for any shoot — it turns studio time into a checklist instead of a guessing game. Here is how to build one that works.

Why a Shot List Matters

Photography time is billed by the hour or half-day, so every minute spent deciding what to shoot next is money. A tight shot list keeps the day moving, guarantees the must-have images get captured first, and gives everyone on set — photographer, stylist, team members being photographed — the same picture of success.

Start With Where the Photos Will Live

Work backwards from placements, not ideas. List every place a photo will appear: website hero, about page, service pages, Google Business Profile, Instagram grid, ads, email headers, press kit. Each placement implies an orientation, a crop, and negative space for text. A homepage hero needs wide horizontal room for a headline; an Instagram portrait needs vertical 4:5.

The Core Shot Categories

Most brand shoots draw from five buckets:

  • People — headshots, team portraits, candid working shots
  • Place — storefront, studio, office, environment
  • Process — hands at work, behind the scenes, how the thing gets made
  • Product or service — what you sell, styled and in use
  • Details — textures, tools, small moments that add personality

Structure the List in Priority Tiers

Split shots into must-have, nice-to-have, and bonus. Then group them by location and setup — every lighting change or location move costs 15–30 minutes, so shooting everything at one setup before moving saves real money. A good photographer will re-order your list this way; a great shot list arrives already organized.

Add References, Not Just Descriptions

“Candid team shot, natural light” means something different to everyone. Attach reference images — screenshots from brands you admire, past photos that worked, a simple moodboard. Three reference images communicate more than three paragraphs.

Build In Flex Time

Reserve the last 10–15% of the session for unscripted shots. Some of the best brand images happen between planned setups — but only if the must-haves are already done.
