Skincare and beauty products are some of the most demanding subjects in commercial photography. Glossy bottles pick up every reflection, creams and serums need to look fresh under hot lights, and shoppers zoom in on packaging text before they buy. Here is how we approach beauty product shoots in our South Florida studio, and how to prepare if you are planning one.
Start With a Spotless Product
Beauty packaging shows everything: fingerprints on glass, dust on matte plastic, lint on velvet pouches. Before a single frame is shot, every product should be wiped with a microfiber cloth and handled with gloves. Retouching can remove a stray speck, but cleaning in advance is faster and keeps textures authentic.
Lighting: Soft, Diffused, and Controlled
Most beauty products photograph best under large, diffused light sources. Softboxes close to the product wrap light around curved bottles and keep specular highlights long and elegant instead of harsh and blown out. White bounce cards fill shadows; black cards define the edges of clear glass and acrylic so products do not disappear into a white background.
The Shots Every Beauty Brand Needs
A complete beauty catalog usually includes five shot types:
- Packshots on white — clean e-commerce hero images for your store and marketplaces
- Texture and swatch shots — smears of cream, drops of serum, powder crushes that show what is inside
- Ingredient styling — botanicals, citrus, or actives arranged around the product
- Lifestyle and in-use shots — real skin, real application, natural light looks
- Scale shots — the product in a hand or on a vanity so buyers understand its size
Handling Reflective Packaging
Glass droppers, mirrored caps, and foil labels reflect the entire room — including the photographer. We control this with large diffusion panels, careful camera placement, and flags that shape what the reflective surface “sees.” The goal is gradient highlights that communicate glossiness without hot spots that hide label text.
Consistency Across Your Product Line
If you sell twelve SKUs, your product grid is an ad in itself. Locking camera height, focal length, lighting, and product spacing means every new SKU drops neatly into your store. We document the setup on every beauty shoot so re-orders and new launches match perfectly, even months later.
What Beauty Product Photography Costs
Beauty work typically prices per finished image, with volume discounts for full product lines. See our full product photography pricing guide for current per-image rates and package examples, and our product photography tips if you want to improve your own setup first.
